Grinding Metal examines potential waiver wire additions that can assist your team during the fantasy baseball season. From home runs to pitching strikeouts, Grinding Metal has you covered. Week 18 is here, so let's start things off.
Vaughn Grissom, 2B/SS, Atlanta Braves
The 21-year-old rookie has already made a splash in his big-league debut by collecting two hits (including a home run) and a stolen base. Prior to the call-up, Grissom was hitting .363/.408/.517 with 11 home runs at Double-A Mississippi. With Orlando Arcia out with a hamstring injury, and no return date set for Ozzie Albies, Grissom should see plenty of playing time.
Paul DeJong, SS, St. Louis Cardinals
This waiver pickup would simply be for the home runs. Since returning to the big-leagues on July 30th from Triple-A, DeJong has smashed 4 home runs. In his past 7 games, he's hitting .381/.480/.857.
Dustin May, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers
With one rehab outing left, the hard throwing right-handed pitcher will return to the big-leagues very soon. May already has a high ownership, but there may still be a chance you can pick him up on waivers. He's struck out 26 hitters over 16 innings in rehab appearances. He's likely to return to the rotation against the Miami Marlins next week.
Ian Kennedy, RP, Arizona Diamondbacks
With Mark Melancon out of the closer role for the time being, the veteran Kennedy should be considered for any fantasy owner looking for "cheap" save opportunities. Over the past two weeks, Kennedy has been the primary option in the ninth inning.
